JP, I love the way you explain the little things the nuances that can make a person understand how a technique works. This makes all the difference in the world. Case in point: I stopped and watched while you explained two things: 1) how to get a single note by puckering your lower lip, and leaving the upper lip relaxed. 2) How to bend a note in holes 1 - 6. You know what? It worked for me first time!! I'm playing single notes and bending them at will, and then relaxing my ambrachure and playing the strait "unbent" note too! Everyone talks about the difficulty of "bending" notes. Well, when I played you CD on "bending" I was able to bend on my first try. Your instructions on tongue placement was very explicite and by following these instructions I could actually bend the 2 and 4 holes from a high sounding bend down to a very low bend on the same breath. What a GREAT sound! And, it was me making that sound in the first hour of your lessons.

Some students have inherited a harmonica from a loved one who has passed on and they choose to honor their spirit by learning to play. Others will go for the limelight on stage. I was so depressed I couldn’t study…I could barely eat for weeks…I’ll never forget that day one of my musician friends came to my room and asked me if I wanted to go to the music store to buy a harmonica.

I told him, “No.”

I was not a natural born musician and I didn’t come from a musical family. In fact, I quit piano as a kid and felt like a total musical failure…but my musician friend wouldn’t let the harmonica thing go…he knew I was in a bad rut…he was persistent…and loving…and he actually held my hand as he walked me out my bedroom door to take me to the music store.

Looking back, it’s hard for me to believe how deeply that friend changed my life by not giving up on me.

For most of my life I was pretty much a geek who got bullied as a kid. I was late bloomer who was really small and skinny. I couldn’t get a date so I preferred to be the teacher’s pet by studying a lot. When I picked up the harmonica, I was taking pre-medical studies at Northwestern University in Chicago and was planning to go to medical school the following year…But much to my mom and dad’s dismay that all changed when I found the harmonica…in less than 4 years from the day my buddy turned me on to harmonica, I was playing on CNN Showbiz Tonight and touring the world as a professional harmonica player for Grammy nominated Abra Moore… So much for med-school…I never looked back and I still have a smile on my face twenty years later…
